West Africa: learning under duress
Education is a fundamental pillar of development in West Africa, playing a crucial role in poverty reduction and improving living conditions. In recent decades, significant progress has been made in school enrollment, particularly through free primary education policies and initiatives aimed at promoting girls' access to education. However, many challenges remain, hindering the achievement of an inclusive and effective education system.
These challenges include a lack of adequate school infrastructure, a shortage of qualified teachers, and inequalities in access to education between urban and rural areas. Furthermore, the economic hardship faced by families, as well as political and security crises in some countries, impede educational continuity and increase school dropout rates.
Faced with these obstacles, several national and international initiatives are being implemented to improve the quality and accessibility of education. The development of digital education, teacher training, and the adaptation of curricula to local realities are all avenues being explored to build a future where every child in West Africa can benefit from a quality education and contribute to the development of their society.
